LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The University of Southern California (USC) has appointed Beong-Soo Kim as its new president, the university said Wednesday.

The USC Board of Trustees unanimously approved Kim's appointment as the institution's 13th president following what officials described as a highly competitive and comprehensive search process.

"As a next generation president, we believe that he can dramatically accelerate USC's institutional advancement as a distinctive leader in higher education during a time of unprecedented change," USC Board of Trustees chair Suzanne Nora Johnson said in a statement.

Since July, Kim has led USC as interim president and will immediately assume his new position.

Kim's career spans higher education, health care, legal practice, and public service. He previously served as USC's senior vice president and general counsel, and as a lecturer at the USC Gould School of Law, according to the statement.

Founded in 1880, USC is a leading private research institution in Los Angeles with 23 schools. USC currently enrolls approximately 46,000 students for the 2025-2026 academic year.
