LOS ANGELES, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- A total of 30 people were detained, cited and released overnight during demonstrations in Minneapolis, the largest city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, authorities said on Saturday.
These protesters were detained "after blocking roadways and damaging property during a downtown march," the city of Minneapolis said in a statement, urging protesters to remain peaceful amid federal shooting aftermath.
From Friday to Saturday, a large crowd of several hundred protesters gathered near the Canopy Hotel and Depot Renaissance Hotel. The Depot Renaissance Hotel suffered approximately 6,000 U.S. dollars in damage to windows and in graffiti, according to the city.
Throughout the evening, the crowd moved downtown, with people throwing snow, ice and rocks at officers, police vehicles and other vehicles in the roadway.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara told media Saturday morning that those people were arrested after a group of protesters broke apart from the main group of over 1,000 demonstrators and allegedly blocked roadways and caused property damage.
"I'm inspired by the countless community members who have showed up to provide food, advocate for justice and keep the peace," said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in a statement. "For the vast majority who have ensured we don't take the bait from the Trump administration, I'm grateful."
"But if anyone causes property damage or puts others in danger, they will be arrested," he noted.
Renee Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was fatally shot on Wednesday by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. The city has remained tense following the shooting, as outrage has grown locally and nationwide. More than 1,000 protests and vigils are planned across the country on Saturday to honor Good. ■
