MEXICO CITY, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Honduran lawmaker Gladis Aurora Lopez was wounded Thursday after an explosive device was hurled at a group of people in a rear area of the National Congress building, police said.
The device detonated minutes before a congressional session was set to begin. Lopez had been speaking with reporters when an explosive device was thrown from outside and detonated nearby, causing injuries in her shoulder, back and head. She was rushed to the hospital.
National Police Director Manuel Aguilar Godoy said that a specialized investigative team has been deployed to review security camera footage from inside the legislature, 911 emergency-system recordings and nearby surveillance in an effort to identify those responsible.
Congress president Luis Redondo condemned the violence in a statement on social media. Local media reported that the incident occurred amid tense political demonstrations outside the building. ■
