MEXICO CITY, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico on Friday, with no immediate reports of significant damage, according to Mexico's National Seismological Service.

The agency said the quake occurred at 7:58 a.m. local time (1358 GMT), with the epicenter located about 15 km southwest of San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero, at a depth of approximately 10 km.

In the capital of Mexico City, loudspeakers on the streets broadcast a seismic alert several seconds before the shaking was felt.

The tremor was also detected in the states of Sonora, Baja California and Oaxaca, with intensities ranging from moderate to considerable, it said.
