NEW YORK, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Parts of the U.S. Army's Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia state were locked down Wednesday after an active shooter was reported on the sprawling Army post, according to an official social media post of the fort.
At least five soldiers were shot at Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield. The gunman was apprehended shortly afterward, according to the fort.
The lockdown was initiated at 11:04 a.m. (1504 GMT) and was lifted in the main cantonment area at 12:10 p.m. (1610 GMT). The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex, where the shooting reportedly occurred, is still under lockdown.
"All Soldiers were treated on-site and moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment. There is no active threat to the community," said Fort Stewart.
It said in another post that "casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing." It did not specify whether the casualties include injuries, deaths, or both.
Located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southwest of Savannah city, Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Atlanta said on social media that its Savannah office is coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division. The incident remains under investigation. ■
