SAN FRANCISCO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- A small plane crashed Thursday morning into a military housing neighborhood in San Diego, California, according to local authorities.
The aircraft struck approximately 15 homes, sparking fires in multiple residences and vehicles, said Dan Eddy, assistant chief of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
"We have jet fuel all over the place. We have hazmat on scene right now, and we've asked for more resources to come for that," Eddy said, adding that multiple neighborhoods in the area were evacuated.
Authorities are still searching for the pilot and any other individuals who may have been aboard the plane, which appears to have been a Cessna private jet. No fatalities or injuries have been confirmed yet.
"The good thing that we have was (that) we have not transported anybody off scene from any of these areas here right now," Eddy said. "And we're searching through to make sure that nobody's in any of those homes."
He confirmed that the affected residences were military housing units.
Local police issued a statement on the social media platform X, advising the public to avoid the area. In a follow-up message, they announced the closure of two nearby elementary schools for the day. ■
