LOS ANGELES, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Disney and Marvel Studios' newest release "Thunderbolts*" took the top spot at the North American box office on its opening weekend with an estimated three-day cume of 76 million U.S. dollars, data from measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
Overseas, the superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the team Thunderbolts took in 86.1 million dollars for a global total of 162.1 million dollars through Sunday.
"Thunderbolts*" is the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Jake Schreier, the film stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Harbour, among others.
The film, with a budget of 180 million dollars, has received an approval rating of 88 percent based on 257 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It also earned an "A-" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.
Warner Bros. Pictures' horror film "Sinners" slipped to second on its third weekend with 33 million dollars. The film has grossed 179.7 million dollars in North America for a worldwide running tally of 236.7 million dollars.
Rounding out the top three, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' fantasy comedy film "A Minecraft Movie" earned 13.7 million dollars on its fifth weekend for a North American total of 398.2 million dollars. ■
