MEXICO CITY, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Some legislators in the United States are "stuck in the past" and continue to back the Cold War-era trade embargo on Cuba, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Wednesday.

At his daily press conference, the president noted the embargo, which has been in place for more than 60 years, is one of the drivers of Cuban immigration to the United States using Mexico often as a transit route.

While the Cuban government is willing to negotiate with Washington, "U.S. politicians are stuck in the past," he said.

"For a long time they have been applying a policy that does not correspond to the new reality," he told reporters.

The embargo against Cuba, he added, "is a flagrant violation of human rights."

Lopez Obrador, who took office in December 2018 and ends his term in September, has repeatedly condemned the trade and financial sanctions imposed on Cuba by the United States.
