BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Prolonged and indiscriminate use of unilateral sanctions by the United States has caused serious humanitarian consequences, according to the Report on Human Rights Violations in the United States in 2023, which was released on Wednesday.

Since 1950, the United States has used more sanctions than any other country in the world, said the report issued by China's State Council Information Office.

The United States has sanctioned more than 20 countries, it said, citing data released by the U.S. Treasury Department on Dec. 28, 2023.

Noting that 70 percent of Syria's population faces food shortages, and that "12 million people do not know where their next meal is coming from" and "2.9 million people are at risk of sliding into hunger," the report said that the U.S. sanctions have further exacerbated the poverty of the Syrian people.

The U.S. sanctions against Iran affect the import of life-saving iron-regulating medicines for Iranian thalassemia patients, Alena Douhan, the UN Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, was quoted by the report as saying. "This not only violates their right to health, but also results in increased complications and mortality rates."
