WASHINGTON, May 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Joe Biden issued a statement Wednesday condemning the "horrific act of violence" against Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was shot in an attempted assassination.
Biden said he was "alarmed" to hear about the attack on Fico, who, according to media reports, was shot multiple times after leaving a government meeting in the Slovak town of Handlova. The prime minister was in a life-threatening condition.
Biden said he and his wife, Jill Biden, "are praying for" Fico's "swift recovery, and our thoughts are with his family and the people of Slovakia."
"Our embassy is in close touch with the government of Slovakia and ready to assist," Biden said. ■
