SAN FRANCISCO, July 19 (Xinhua) -- President of Stanford University Marc Tessier-Lavigne on Wednesday announced resignation from Aug. 31, after a report identified flaws in research related to him.

"In light of the report and its impact on his ability to lead Stanford, the Board decided to accept President Tessier-Lavigne's resignation and agrees with him that it is in the University's best interests," said Jerry Yang, chair of the Stanford University Board of Trustees, in a statement.

In December 2022, the board launched a review following allegations that Tessier-Lavigne engaged in fraud and other unethical conduct related to his research and papers.

The papers had "serious flaws in the presentation of research data," as well as "apparent manipulation" of data by other contributors, according to the report by a panel engaged by the board, which was released on Wednesday.

According to the report, data manipulation was identified in scientific papers involving Tessier-Lavigne, but the panel found no evidence that Tessier-Lavigne knew of or engaged in the research misconduct occurring in his lab.

The board has appointed Professor Richard Saller to serve as president of Stanford University on an interim basis. His appointment will begin on Sept. 1, 2023, and last until a new president is in place.
