"The Flash" tops North American box office on opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros. Pictures' presentation of DC Comics' superhero film "The Flash" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 55.1 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, "The Flash" is directed by Argentine filmmaker Andy Muschietti. American actor Ezra Miller reprises his role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero's first-ever standalone feature film.

The film holds an approval rating of 67 percent based on 289 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned a tepid "B" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

Another newcomer, Disney and Pixar's animated film "Elemental," opened in second place with 29.5 million this weekend. Sony's animated superhero film "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" finished third on its third weekend with 27.8 million dollars for a North American cume of 280.4 million dollars through Sunday.
