LOS ANGELES, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Universal Pictures' action film "Fast X" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 67.5 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

The 10th film in the long-running Fast & Furious Saga also raced to the No. 1 spot at the international box office with an estimated weekend cume of 251.4 million dollars, making it the biggest international opening of the year so far.

The film currently sits at a total worldwide gross of 318.9 million dollars, with around 78 million dollars coming from the Chinese mainland.

Directed by Louis Leterrier and starring Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, "Fast X" launches the final chapters of the popular global franchises.

The sequel holds an approval rating of 54 percent based on 223 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned a "B+" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

Disney and Marvel Studios' superhero film "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3" dropped to second place with more than 31.9 million dollars on its third weekend. The film has grossed nearly 266.5 million dollars in North America, bringing the global total to more than 659.1 million dollars through Sunday.

Rounding out the top three, Universal Pictures' animated film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" earned 9.8 million dollars on its seventh weekend, lifting the North American total to 549.2 million dollars. The film has jumped to a global total of 1.2 billion dollars to date.
