NEW YORK, April 28 (Xinhua) -- After a series of mass shootings this spring, U.S. voters would prefer focusing on specific gun control measures rather than arming citizens to reduce gun violence, reported Fox News on Thursday.
Some 87 percent of the respondents favor requiring criminal background checks on all gun buyers, 81 percent improving enforcement of existing gun laws, and also 81 percent raising the legal age to buy a gun to 21, a new Fox News Poll has found.
Around 80 percent support requiring mental health checks on gun buyers, 80 percent allowing police to take guns from those considered a danger to themselves or others, and 77 percent requiring a 30-day waiting period for all gun purchases, it also found.
Another 61 percent favor banning assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons. On Tuesday, Washington became the 10th state to institute a general ban on assault weapon sales.
While nearly half, or 45 percent, would encourage more citizens to carry guns to defend against attackers, a slim majority -- 52 percent -- is opposed, it added. ■
