MEXICO CITY, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Mexico plans to nearly double the number of Cuban doctors working at state-run hospitals, especially in remote towns, an official said Tuesday.

"We have just received the great news that we are going to be able to increase the number of Cuban doctors to almost double, with 600 more doctors," said Zoe Robledo, general director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).

Currently, 610 Cuban specialists are working under an IMSS program to boost access to healthcare, called Bienestar (Wellbeing), according to Robledo.

To improve the country's state-run healthcare system, the administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has hired some 4,721 specialist doctors to date, official data showed.

Lopez Obrador, who has accused his predecessors of allowing the system to languish, has worked to strengthen the IMSS by contracting more doctors.
