LOS ANGELES, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Sony Pictures' action comedy film "Bullet Train" sprinted to the top of North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 30.1 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, showed figures from measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

It's the 2nd highest opening for an R-rated film so far this year and the 3rd highest R-rated original since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in North America.

Directed by David Leitch, the film stars Brad Pitt as an unlucky assassin whose latest mission puts him on a collision course with lethal adversaries from around the globe -- all with connected, yet conflicting, objectives -- on the world's fastest train.

"Bullet Train" holds an approval rating of 54 percent based on 238 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. According to market research firm CinemaScore, the film received a "B+" rating from audiences.

Overseas, the film took in 32.4 million dollars this weekend for a global total of 62.5 million dollars.

Warner Bros. Pictures' animated film "DC League of Super-Pets" slipped to second place with 11.2 million dollars on its second weekend, pushing its North American cume to 45.1 million dollars.

Rounding out the top three, Universal Pictures' science-fiction thriller film "Nope" earned 8.5 million dollars on its third weekend for a North American total of 97.97 million dollars.
