PARIS, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- A total of 779 people were arrested across France during a new round of protests on Saturday against the rising cost of living, French television channel BFM TV reported Sunday, citing figures from the French Interior Ministry.

Around 320,000 people took part in a new round of protests across France on Saturday, according to the ministry. In Paris, the ministry put the number of demonstrators at 70,000 as of 5 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Saturday.

Although most marches passed off peacefully, the dispersal of protesters led to tensions in several cities. In Paris, a homemade explosive device detonated at the feet of a member of the security forces near Porte de Charenton in the 12th arrondissement on Saturday, leaving him slightly injured.

The Paris prosecutor's office said Sunday that an investigation had been opened on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident. ■
