BRATISLAVA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Saturday in Slovakia for local and regional elections, with voters set to elect representatives to municipal and regional council bodies for four-year terms.

Voting will continue until 8 p.m. (1800 GMT), with 6,029 polling stations established across 2,926 municipalities, towns, cities and city districts. Nearly 4.41 million people are eligible to cast ballots.

Voters are electing mayors, members of municipal and city councils, governors of self-governing regions and regional councillors. In the capital Bratislava and the eastern city of Kosice, voters are also choosing district mayors and members of district councils.

Voting is restricted to polling stations in voters' places of permanent residence.

Both Slovak citizens aged 18 and above and eligible foreign nationals may vote. Slovak voters must present a valid identity card, while foreign nationals are required to show an identity card indicating a long-term residence permit. ■
