BARCELONA, Spain, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The 21st edition of Barcelona Design Week (BDW) is underway in the northeastern Spanish city, bringing together designers, artists and businesses to explore new approaches to creativity and innovation.
Running from Oct. 14 to 26 under the theme "PRO-TEST," this year's event focuses on experimentation and the role of design in challenging conventional thinking and developing alternative solutions.
Alessandro Manetti, curator of this year's design week, said the theme encourages designers to explore alternatives to approaches that are often presented as the only possible options.
The event features around 140 activities, including exhibitions, installations, talks and workshops, with the participation of approximately 100 brands.
Among the highlights is the Shutter Route initiative, which brings art and design into Barcelona's streets. A total of 185 businesses across 10 neighborhoods are collaborating with local artists to transform storefront shutters into creative works.
Another major attraction is Underground BDW, an experimental exhibition featuring 30 exhibitors from eight countries, showcasing innovative approaches to designing, producing and experiencing everyday objects and spaces.
In addition, initiatives involving universities and design schools aim to strengthen connections between young creative talent and the business community.
International cooperation is another focus of the event, with projects linking Barcelona to design communities in several European cities.
Isabel Roig, director of Barcelona Design Week, said this year's edition strengthens the event's connections with major international design platforms. ■
