LISBON, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese President Antonio Jose Seguro on Wednesday invited all parliamentary parties to talks on social cohesion at the Belem Palace on Oct. 29, amid ongoing protests over housing issues across the country.
Seguro has repeatedly expressed concerns about social and territorial cohesion, highlighting persistent socioeconomic inequalities.
On Monday, as demonstrations demanding the right to housing continued in multiple cities, he called for broad agreement between the government and opposition parties to adopt both urgent and lasting measures to address the issue.
"It is necessary to look at this problem with seriousness and with the contribution of everyone. That is my appeal," he said.
Under Portuguese law, the president has the power to dissolve parliament and call early elections in situations of institutional political crisis, following consultations with parliamentary parties and the Council of State. ■
