RIGA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Latvia's Central Election Commission on Friday officially confirmed the results of the 15th parliamentary election and the list of 100 newly elected lawmakers, the Latvian news agency LETA reported.

The United List, a political alliance that includes incumbent Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, emerged as the largest force in parliament with 41 seats, falling short of an outright majority.

The United List was followed by Latvia First with 17 and the Sovereign Power/Alliance of Young Latvians with 15. The National Alliance and the Progressives each won 10 seats, while New Unity took seven.

Voter turnout stood at 51.79 percent, with approximately 807,000 people casting their ballots.

With no party or alliance securing a parliamentary majority, the formation of the next government will depend on coalition negotiations, in which the United List is expected to play a pivotal role.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics announced on Oct. 6 that he supported Kulbergs in leading talks on forming the next government.

Latvia held its parliamentary election on Oct. 3, with 1,428 candidates from 14 parties and political alliances competing for 100 parliamentary seats. Under the country's proportional representation system, parties and alliances must win at least 5 percent of the vote to enter parliament.

The newly elected parliament is scheduled to convene for its first sitting on Nov. 3, when it will begin its term. ■
