SARAJEVO, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1,639 small arms and light weapons and their components were destroyed at the Pobjeda foundry near Travnik in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) as part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, the BiH Ministry of Security said on Saturday.

The destroyed items included 883 firearms and 756 weapon components seized during police operations or voluntarily handed over by citizens.

The activity was organized by the Small Arms and Light Weapons Coordination Board, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in BiH and its South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC).

The board said removing every illegal weapon reduces the risk of its misuse and contributes to greater public safety.

Since 2017, BiH authorities have destroyed nearly 15,600 small arms and light weapons with EU financial support and technical assistance from UNDP in BiH. ■
