MADRID, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Twelve people were injured after part of a bar collapsed early Saturday in Spain's northern autonomous community of La Rioja, with nine of them taken to medical facilities for treatment.
The collapse occurred in the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra at around 5:25 a.m. local time (0325 GMT), Spanish news agency EFE reported.
About 25 to 30 people inside the bar were initially trapped by debris and unable to leave.
Citing preliminary information, EFE said the bar's floor collapsed first, followed by part of the ceiling.
Among the 12 injured, one man was suspected of having suffered a leg fracture and an open wound, while the others sustained minor injuries. Nine people were taken to medical facilities for treatment.
Firefighters carried out search and rescue operations at the scene and later confirmed that no one remained trapped beneath the rubble.
The collapse also caused part of a wall of an adjacent residential building to give way. No one was inside the residence at the time, and no additional injuries were reported.
The Civil Guard has opened an investigation into the cause of the accident. ■
