THE HAGUE, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML on Tuesday held a ceremony to mark the start of construction of its second major industrial campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, as it expands manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand from the global semiconductor industry.

The new site, known as Brainport Industries Campus (BIC) North, will span 350,000 square meters and could eventually accommodate up to 20,000 workplaces, the company said.

"The growing global demand from the semiconductor industry requires continuous investments," ASML President and CEO Christophe Fouquet said.

According to ASML, the first phase of BIC North is expected to be completed in 2029 and will accommodate at least 3,000 employees. The integrated industrial campus will bring together production, logistics and supporting office functions, with the positions primarily filled by teams relocating from existing ASML sites.

ASML, the world's leading supplier of extreme ultraviolet lithography systems, announced plans in January to cut about 1,700 jobs, mostly in the Netherlands, despite reporting record annual results.
