VITEBSK, Belarus, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Belarus strives to deepen cooperation with China in the peat industry, Valery Kovalev, director general of Beltopgaz, the Belarusian state production association for fuel and gasification, said on Thursday.
During a media tour marking the 25th anniversary of the founding of Belarusian Energy Ministry, Kovalev said that in 2025, exports of Belarusian peat products to China have increased by 13.5 times compared with 2024, and in the first half of 2026, deliveries were twice those of the same period in 2025.
Beltopgaz plans to further expand exports to China and sees broad prospects in this direction, Kovalev said.
Beyond exports, the industry also plans to deep process peat into humates, fertilizers, and soil improvers, and actively promote the new products in the Chinese market, he said.
Meanwhile, Belarus is pursuing technological cooperation with Chinese partners and is open to joint production of equipment with Chinese firms, Kovalev said.
Peat is a dark, soil-like material made from partially decomposed plant matter that accumulates in waterlogged, low-oxygen environments such as bogs and wetlands. It is commonly used as fuel, and also in horticulture as a growing medium or soil amendment. Belarus holds substantial peat resources, with total reserves estimated at about 2.4 billion tons. ■
