ROME, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- A severe storm accompanied by hail and strong winds hit Cremona in northern Italy on Friday, causing extensive damage across the city, local media reported.
According to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the storm caused significant damage in just about 10 minutes, with roads blocked by fallen trees and debris, roofs damaged and at least 10,000 vehicles hit.
A total of 43 people were taken to hospital with injuries, mainly caused by hail, falling debris and strong wind gusts. None was reported to be in serious condition.
Cremona Cathedral was among the buildings damaged in the storm. Part of the covering of a tower on the northern side of the cathedral collapsed, while the glass of the large rose window on the main facade was visibly damaged.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel worked through the night to clear fallen trees and debris, secure damaged areas and assist people in difficulty. Authorities were continuing to assess the damage and restore normal conditions in the city on Saturday. ■
