BUDAPEST, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Hungary's parliament on Friday elected political scientist Anna Roza Unger to head the newly established National Asset Recovery and Protection Office (NVVH), an institution created by Prime Minister Peter Magyar's government to investigate the alleged misuse of public assets.
Unger was elected president of the office with 137 votes in favor, seven against and one abstention.
Lawmakers also elected Katalin Tasnadi as the NVVH's vice president responsible for investigations, with 139 votes in favor, six against and one abstention.
Unger, an associate professor at Budapest's Eotvos Lorand University (ELTE), is a political scientist specializing in elections, democracy, democratization and authoritarian political systems.
During her parliamentary hearing, Unger said the office should not limit itself to investigating individual cases, but also should examine the broader political and institutional mechanisms that enabled the alleged misuse of public resources under previous governments.
Unger, whose first mandate will last six years, stressed that accountability should not become "political revenge" and cautioned against expectations of quick results.
The establishment of the NVVH followed one of Magyar's major campaign pledges ahead of the April parliamentary election: to investigate the management of public assets and pursue accountability for alleged corruption and misuse of public funds under the previous governments led by Viktor Orban. ■
