YEREVAN, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Armenia's former president Robert Kocharyan and his son Sedrak were arrested in a corruption probe, the country's Anti-Corruption Committee said Tuesday.
Armenia's Prosecutor General's Office said a criminal prosecution was initiated against Kocharyan on Monday on charges of abuse of office, receiving bribes and money laundering.
The committee alleged that while in office, Kocharyan used his position to acquire valuable state-owned properties on fabricated grounds and at prices significantly below market value.
The committee added that the assets were registered in the names of affiliated companies to conceal their true ownership and alleged criminal origin, and were later transferred or sold through various transactions.
Six people have been arrested in the case. Kocharyan, 71, served as Armenia's second president from 1998 to 2008. ■
