VIENNA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Two small planes collided and crashed on Monday morning in Austria's eastern state of Lower Austria, killing both pilots, according to local authorities.

The accident occurred about one kilometer from an airfield near the Langenlois region, according to the local fire department.

The two aircraft involved were ultralight planes. Police and fire officials said one of the planes was likely towing a glider into the air and banked after the glider was released. The second small plane had just taken off when it collided with the first aircraft.

The glider that had been towed into the air was not involved in the accident.

Both planes caught fire following the collision and the flames had been brought under control. The two pilots, aged 36 and 70, died at the scene. The cause of the accident remained under investigation.
