WARSAW, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- As artificial intelligence (AI) moves rapidly from laboratories into factories, hospitals and classrooms, its expanding applications are creating new opportunities for scientific and technological cooperation between China and Poland.
Polish experts see growing potential for deeper China-Poland AI cooperation, citing the complementary strengths of China's mature industrial ecosystem and broad application market and Poland's expertise in mathematics, engineering and basic research.
Katarzyna Kaniewska, an official with the Foreign Cooperation Office of the Polish Chamber of Commerce, said China and Poland can deepen cooperation in healthcare, climate-related services and education.
Both China and Europe face population aging and declining birth rates. AI can help ease pressure on healthcare systems by handling some routine examinations, laboratory tests and administrative tasks, allowing medical professionals to devote more time to work requiring human judgment, Kaniewska said.
It can also support climate monitoring and early warning, while serving as an auxiliary tool for teachers and students, she added.
For companies, cooperation can help develop AI solutions tailored to local market demand. For researchers, it can expand existing personnel exchanges into joint work in basic research, said Roman Szewczyk, director of the Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Cezary Blaszczyk, director of the Department of International Cooperation at the National Centre for Research and Development of Poland, said Chinese and Polish researchers have shown a strong willingness to work together and that the potential for AI cooperation is substantial.
According to Szewczyk, basic research should remain central to AI cooperation. His institute has trained doctoral students from China, and he hopes collaboration can expand beyond personnel exchanges to joint fundamental research.
Krzysztof Pyrc, president of the Foundation for Polish Science, said the potential of research cooperation with China remains underestimated by some scientists abroad.
Greater links among universities, research institutes, funding bodies and enterprises can help convert complementary strengths into concrete results, he said.
For China and Poland, robotics cooperation can bring together AI algorithms, sensors, control systems, mechatronics and manufacturing expertise, creating opportunities in areas ranging from industrial automation to medical and elderly-care services.
The benefits, however, will extend beyond robotics.
The same model -- joint research followed by local testing and adaptation -- can be applied in healthcare, climate services and education. It can also make AI tools more accessible to Polish small and medium-sized enterprises, helping them improve efficiency and develop new products and services.
Blaszczyk emphasized that companies generally approach cooperation in practical terms, focusing on technological strengths, product competitiveness and market demand.
Such an approach can help turn scientific collaboration into viable products and services with wider economic and social value.
"I hope the challenges brought by AI development can be addressed through bilateral cooperation, and that AI can benefit humanity and create more possibilities for future cooperation," said Blaszczyk. ■
