BUDAPEST, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Former Supreme Court chief Andras Baka has accepted the ruling Tisza party's nomination for president of Hungary, Prime Minister Peter Magyar said on Saturday.

"We personally informed Dr. Andras Baka about the decision of the Tisza parliamentary group and asked him to accept the nomination for President of the Republic," Magyar posted on Facebook.

Baka accepted the nomination to serve the nation and expressed readiness to work for the unity of the "Hungarian nation and for a democratic, European Hungary," Magyar added.

Earlier on Saturday, the ruling Tisza parliamentary group selected Baka, 73, as its presidential candidate in a secret ballot. Parliament is scheduled to elect Hungary's new president next Tuesday.
