BUDAPEST, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said on Friday that the leadership of the ruling Tisza party will propose three potential candidates for the country's presidency.
The party's parliamentary group will hold a vote on Saturday to select the final presidential candidate from among the three proposed nominees, ahead of the vote in Parliament to elect the president on Aug. 11, Magyar said at a press conference.
The three nominees were selected after a long consultation on around 10 potential candidates, and the shortlisted names would come as "no surprises" for those who have followed recent news reports, according to Magyar.
Former President Tamas Sulyok's mandate ended at midnight on July 20 under the 17th amendment to Hungary's Fundamental Law. Speaker of Parliament Agnes Forsthoffer is currently serving as acting president. Under the Fundamental Law, parliament must elect a new president within 30 days. ■
