LISBON, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Portugal's Council of Ministers on Thursday approved a national electricity distribution grid development and investment plan for 2026-2030, with a total projected investment of 1.58 billion euros (1.82 billion U.S. dollars), to modernize infrastructure and accelerate the energy transition.

The plan, known as PDIRD-E 2026-2030, aims to increase grid capacity, ease bottlenecks in connecting new renewable energy generation, consumption and storage projects, and improve the security and quality of electricity supply.

The government said the investments will also accelerate projects under the Portugal Transformation, Recovery and Resilience (PTRR) program.

Portugal has been expanding its renewable energy generation in recent years, driving demand for grid upgrades to accommodate new renewable and energy storage projects.
