MOSCOW, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Russia does not recognize the U.S. unilateral extension of its continental shelf boundaries, the Russian delegation to the 31st session of the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) said in a statement.
The statement, delivered at the ISA assembly in Kingston, Jamaica, rejected Washington's 2023 declaration on expanding the outer limits of its continental shelf in the Arctic and the Bering Sea, saying the move was inconsistent with established international practice and failed to comply with relevant procedures, local media reported Thursday.
The Russian delegation also said any unilateral U.S. activities to develop seabed resources within the claimed areas would be unacceptable.
In 2023, the United States announced an expansion of its continental shelf in the Arctic and the Bering Sea. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, ratified by most countries worldwide, claims to establish the outer limits of a continental shelf beyond the standard 200-nautical-mile limit require recommendations from the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. ■
