WARSAW, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Modernist Center of Gdynia, a Baltic port city in northern Poland, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Poland's Ministry of Culture and National Heritage said Monday.
The decision was made at the ongoing 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.
Developed mainly in the 1920s and 1930s, Gdynia's city center reflects the large-scale application of modernist urban planning and architecture as the former village was transformed into a major port after Poland regained independence.
The ministry said the city's regular street grid, close integration with the port and the Baltic Sea, and its residential, public and villa architecture embody the functional and rational principles of modernism.
The inscription comes as Gdynia marks the 100th anniversary of receiving city rights. The Modernist Center of Gdynia is Poland's 18th World Heritage site, bringing the country's total to 16 cultural and two natural properties. ■
