MADRID, July 23 (Xinhua) -- A 54-year-old construction worker died on Friday as the result of a fall while working on the renovation of FC Barcelona's Camp Nou Stadium.
According to the Catalan regional police force, the fatal accident happened at around 15.30 local time. Officers arrived quickly on the scene accompanied by an emergency medical team, but were unable to save the man's life.
The renovation work at the Camp Nou stadium began over three years ago on June 1, 2023, with FC Barcelona forced to play in the former Olympic Stadium at nearby Montjuic before returning with a reduced capacity last November.
Work is now continuing on completing the third tier of the ground and a compression ring to support the roof of the stadium, with the final capacity of the Camp Nou programmed to be around 105,000. Barcelona will have to return to Montjuic for several months while the roof is being completed. ■
