BERLIN, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Germany World Cup winner Per Mertesacker has been appointed sporting managing director of the German Football Association (DFB), succeeding Andreas Rettig, when he takes up the role in January 2027, the federation announced on Friday.
The 41-year-old has signed a contract running through the 2030 World Cup and will oversee the DFB's national teams and academy, following a unanimous decision by the supervisory board and shareholders.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf described Mertesacker as one of the outstanding figures in German football, praising both his playing career and his work in youth development.
"As a player, he shaped the national team over more than a decade and then led one of Europe's most renowned youth academies," Neuendorf said. "His expertise, clear values and leadership qualities make him an excellent choice for the position."
Mertesacker said returning to the DFB in an executive role carried special significance after maintaining close ties with the federation since retiring from international football.
"I am very much looking forward to this new responsibility," he said. "German football has enormous potential. With humility, hard work and patience, we want to develop the talents and personalities who can make the difference."
The former central defender will replace Rettig, whose contract expires at the end of 2026. Among his priorities will be strengthening the connection between Germany's senior national team and its youth sides. ■
