ATHENS, July 23 (Xinhua) -- A man was seriously injured on Thursday after a fire sparked a series of explosions at a boat and marine materials manufacturing workshop in Chania on the Greek island of Crete, according to Greece's public broadcaster ERT.
The fire broke out in a storage area of the workshop in the Livadia district of Chania on Thursday afternoon.
The workshop owner reportedly tried to put out the blaze with a water hose while waiting for firefighters to arrive. Despite warnings from nearby residents to stay away from the building, he re-entered the workshop, after which a series of powerful explosions occurred, ERT reported.
The man suffered severe burns over much of his body and was taken to Chania General Hospital for treatment, according to ERT.
The cause of the fire and the subsequent explosions is under investigation. ■
