LISBON, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Airport operator Aeroportos de Portugal (ANA) on Wednesday unveiled the project for Lisbon's new airport, to be named Aeroporto Luis de Camoes, with construction costs estimated at between 7.9 billion euros (9.01 billion U.S. dollars) and 8.9 billion euros (10.15 billion dollars).
The estimate revises a preliminary projection of 8.5 billion euros (9.69 billion dollars) submitted to the government in December 2024, reflecting inflation and updated technological requirements.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2029, with completion targeted for 2033. The airport is expected to begin operations in 2035, two years earlier than the original 2037 timetable.
The airport, to be built at the Campo de Tiro de Alcochete site east of Lisbon, will have an initial annual capacity of 56 million passengers, expandable to 85 million. The first phase will include two runways, 64 boarding gates, 72 passenger boarding bridges, and a terminal covering about 500,000 square meters. ■
