RIGA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The energy ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia agreed on Wednesday to strengthen the Baltic countries' energy security by jointly developing reserve capacities for their power systems, Latvia's Climate and Energy Ministry said.
According to the ministry, the shared reserve capacities will enable faster restoration of electricity supplies to households and businesses in the event of damage or other disruptions.
Latvian Minister of Climate and Energy Janis Vitenbergs, Estonian Minister of Energy and Environment Andres Sutt, and Lithuanian Minister of Energy Lukas Savickas signed a joint declaration on the initiative during a meeting on Wednesday.
The ministers noted that the three countries successfully synchronized their electricity grids with the European energy system in 2025. They said the region now faces new security challenges requiring closer cooperation to strengthen critical infrastructure and improve the resilience of electricity supplies.
Under the declaration, the transmission system operators of the three Baltic states will jointly assess the reserve equipment needed to ensure the rapid restoration of electricity supplies in the event of damage or other emergencies. The equipment includes transformers, poles, generators and other essential assets.
Based on the assessment, the operators will jointly apply for European Union funding to procure and maintain the necessary reserve equipment. ■
