ZAGREB, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Croatian police on Friday destroyed two World War II-era aerial bombs found near the town of Batina in eastern Croatia.

The bombs were discovered a day earlier along the bank of the Danube River.

Mario Kokic, head of the regional anti-explosive unit in Osijek, told local media that the bombs were destroyed through controlled simultaneous detonations at the site where they were found.

He said the bombs had great destructive power, weighing about 120 kg each and containing around 50 kg of high explosives.

Kokic recalled that the wider Batina area saw intense fighting in November 1944, with a heavy concentration of military forces and equipment deployed on both land and water. Such aerial bombs, he noted, were used to destroy transport infrastructure, as well as large vessels.

He noted that this was not the first time explosive devices had surfaced following a significant drop in water levels in the Drava and Danube rivers, as his unit had previously recovered unexploded World War II ordnance under similar conditions.

The bombs were initially spotted by a local resident, who alerted the police.
