LONDON, July 16 (Xinhua) -- London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been nominated for a life peerage in Britain's House of Lords, according to a list published by the British government on Thursday.
The Prime Minister's Office said King Charles III had signified his intention to confer life peerages on 26 people nominated by political party leaders and for the crossbenches.
Khan, who has served as mayor of London since 2016, was among 16 nominees put forward by outgoing British Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party Keir Starmer. A former human rights lawyer, he represented the south London constituency of Tooting in the House of Commons from 2005 to 2016.
Other Labour nominees include former UNISON General Secretary Christina McAnea, former Scottish Parliament Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh and former Treasury minister Kitty Ussher.
Life peers are appointed for life and are entitled to sit in the House of Lords after completing the formal appointment and introduction procedures. ■
