SARAJEVO, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) are bracing for scorching temperatures of up to 41 degrees Celsius, the country's Federal Hydrometeorological Institute (FHMZ) issued an orange weather alert Thursday.
According to forecasts, the Herzegovina region will see maximum temperatures reaching around 41 degrees Celsius, while northern regions of Bosnia are expected to climb to 36 degrees Celsius. The peak of the heatwave is anticipated between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on July 17 and July 18.
Authorities are urging residents to exercise extreme caution during the hottest stretch of the day. Following guidance from the World Meteorological Organization, the public is advised to limit time outdoors between noon and 4:00 p.m., stay hydrated, seek out cool or air-conditioned spaces, and avoid heavy physical activity.
Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, those with chronic conditions, and outdoor workers, are being told to take particular care.
Meanwhile, a major firefighting operation continues in the Rudine area of the Mosevac, Maglaj, where firefighters, volunteers, and local residents are battling the flames. According to an official, helicopters have also been deployed in the effort, with 22 sorties flown just yesterday alone.
Compounded by the extreme heat and dry conditions, multiple fires have recently broken out in the municipalities of Mostar, Capljina, and Konjic. ■
