BUDAPEST, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Gergely Gulyas, parliamentary group leader of Hungary's ruling Fidesz party, has resigned, the Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

Gulyas announced on Monday, following a joint meeting of the parliamentary groups of Fidesz and its coalition partner, the Christian Democratic People's Party (KDNP), that he was stepping down so the group could be led by a politician eligible to run in the next election.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the parliamentary session, he criticized the planned 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law, calling it an "unprecedented overreach." Parliament is scheduled to vote on the amendment later Monday.
