LONDON, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Emergency services declared a major incident on Sunday as firefighters battled a large wildfire near Sychnant Pass on Conwy Mountain in north Wales.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said multiple fire engines, specialist wildfire teams and partner agencies had been deployed to contain the blaze and protect nearby communities, property and infrastructure. Operations were expected to continue for some time because of the fire's size and complexity.
"Firefighters remain on scene working in challenging conditions to contain the fire and protect surrounding communities, property, infrastructure and the environment," said Jami Jennings, service delivery manager of the department.
Residents in Dwygyfylchi and Penmaenmawr were advised to keep windows and doors closed if affected by smoke, while police were coordinating evacuation arrangements. The public was urged to avoid the area and follow road closures and safety instructions.
The fire came as Britain experienced another spell of hot and dry weather, with authorities warning that wildfire risk could reach exceptionally high levels in parts of the country. ■
