LONDON, June 16 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Tuesday that Britain and the European Union (EU) will hold their second summit on July 22, as London continues efforts to rebuild relations with the bloc.
Starmer said in a post on X that he had agreed on the date with European Council President Antonio Costa. His Labour government was delivering on its pledge to reset relations with the EU and "put Britain at the heart of Europe," he added.
"Together we will tackle the cost of living, boost jobs and create opportunities for young people," he added.
Britain and the EU held their first summit in London on May 19, 2025, hosted by Starmer and attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Costa. The meeting was seen by both sides as a key step in efforts to move beyond years of post-Brexit friction and open a new phase in bilateral ties.
At the first summit, the two sides announced a wide-ranging package covering trade, mobility, fisheries, defense and security cooperation and border facilitation.
The deal included plans for a capped and time-limited youth mobility scheme, work toward restoring British participation in the Erasmus+ academic exchange program, measures to ease food and agricultural trade, a 12-year fisheries framework, and steps to deepen defense procurement cooperation.
The second summit will be held less than a month after June 23, which marks 10 years since Britain voted in a referendum to leave the EU. ■
