VIENNA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant temporarily lost all off-site power overnight for the 16th time since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Friday.
According to the IAEA post on social platform X, emergency diesel generators were activated to supply electricity for essential nuclear safety functions during the outage, which lasted for about one hour. The plant was later reconnected to its only remaining external power line.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said the cause of the power loss has not yet been identified. He warned that the latest incident once again highlighted the "precarious" nuclear safety situation at the plant.
The Zaporizhzhia plant, one of Europe's largest nuclear facilities, has been under Russian control since March 2022. ■
