BAKU, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan and Georgia signed a series of strategic agreements in the energy and transport sectors during Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's visit to Azerbaijan on Monday for the 13th session of the World Urban Forum.

According to the Azerbaijani presidential press service, the agreements covered long-term Azerbaijani natural gas supply to Georgia, electricity supply and transit through Georgian territory, as well as transport cooperation aimed at strengthening regional connectivity.

Among the documents signed was a 20-year agreement on Azerbaijani gas supply to Georgia and a new agreement concerning the Georgian section of the Baku-Supsa oil pipeline.

The Georgian government said the new gas agreement was particularly significant because the previous contract, signed in 2003, had expired.

The agreement on the Baku-Supsa oil pipeline is expected to facilitate the resumption of oil transit from Central Asia through Georgia to European markets and increase Georgia's transit revenues.

In the railway sector, the two countries signed a protocol on the continued development of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway corridor, including rehabilitation and reconstruction work on the Marabda-Kartsakhi section.

Passenger rail services between Georgia and Azerbaijan are expected to resume after a six-year suspension. Georgian authorities said train services are scheduled to resume on May 26.
