MADRID, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish airline Plus Ultra announced on Thursday that it is suspending flights to Colombia due to the "unprecedented increase in the cost of aviation fuel," caused by the conflict in the Middle East.

"International air transport is experiencing an extraordinarily complex situation stemming from the conflict in the Middle East," which has led to fuel costs in some markets doubling in just a few weeks, the airline said in a communique.

In addition, the airline said Colombia has other factors that make the rises in fuel costs harder to bear, including high tax burden, airport fees, and an increase in structural operating costs. Therefore, flights to the country will be suspended starting on June 2.

However, Plus Ultra said it will try to compensate by adding an extra flight to Peru, Venezuela and Argentina respectively per week from July.
