RIGA, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Several drones entered Latvian airspace from Russia early Thursday, with two crashing in the eastern region of Latgale, the National Armed Forces (NAF) reported.

Mobile alerts were issued to residents in the Ludza, Balvi, and Rezekne districts during the early hours, said the NAF, adding that the air alert was later lifted and that additional air defense units have been deployed along the eastern border.

All schools in Rezekne were closed, where at least one drone crashed into an oil storage facility, the Latvian news agency LETA reported. Students in Ludza and Balvi switched to remote learning. Following the incident, the Saeima's (parliament's) national security commission will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday.

It remains unclear whether the drones originated from Russia or Ukraine. Recently, Ukrainian drones launched against Russian targets have repeatedly strayed off course and flown into Latvia and Estonia.
